"Which faith community should we contact?"
The chaplain asks it kindly. His pen is already above the line, ready for a name and telephone number. It is a routine question in a hospital room full of routine questions: next of kin, dietary needs, medicines brought from home.
The man in the bed looks toward the window.
"None," he says.
The chaplain writes it down without reacting. He moves to the next line. The whole exchange takes seven seconds.
But the word remains in the room.
None.
It seems larger in ink than it sounded aloud. For two years the man has prayed before dawn, whispered thanks over meals, argued honestly with God, and reached for Jesus when the nights became long. Yet one blank field has made all of that feel unofficial. He begins to wonder whether belonging to God requires a contact number he no longer has.
Perhaps you have met this question on a form, in a conversation, or inside yourself. If there is no congregation to list, are you still one of His?
Yes. Plainly, yes.
A contact field cannot measure a covenant
The form is trying to do a practical job. It wants to know whom to call. It is not trying to define you.
Fear does that afterward.
Fear takes a small administrative blank and enlarges it into a spiritual absence. It says that because no organization can confirm your belonging, perhaps your belonging has expired.

Notice who bears witness. Not a directory. Not a membership database. The Spirit of God bears witness with your spirit.
You are God's own right now, with the word *none* sitting in that box in somebody else's handwriting. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. The witness is placed inside you rather than filed anywhere, and the Holy Spirit carries it where no form can reach to add to it or cross it through. A chaplain's biro does not have that range.
This does not make community unimportant. It makes community incapable of authoring what belongs to God alone. People may recognize belonging, nourish it, and walk beside it. They cannot manufacture it.
The line on the form asks for a human contact. It does not ask whether Christ knows your name.
That is where the knot loosens. You have been answering two questions as though they were one. Who should we call? may honestly be answered none. Whose are you? has a different answer entirely.
You have an honest blank and no spiritual vacancy at all, because you belong to Christ in full. Scripture names the Spirit as God's own witness, which is testimony from the highest possible source and needs no corroboration from a lower one. The Holy Spirit makes your belonging present without borrowing anybody's letterhead to do it. Who should we call? may honestly be answered none. Whose are you? has an entirely different answer.
There may still be grief in the answer. You may remember the names that once would have gone on that line. You may feel exposed when the chaplain moves on. Identity does not forbid grief. It gives grief somewhere safe to stand.
You do not have to turn none into a proud slogan. You do not have to defend it. It is simply the current answer to a practical question.
God is not practical in the small way forms are practical. He does not lose track of a child because the contact field is incomplete.
You are seen with no institutional witness standing anywhere beside you. The written word says the Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit, which is as close as testimony can be given, and He does not wait out in a foyer for somebody else to arrive and verify your name first. He is the verification. There is no second signature required on that page.
Read that as nearness, not as an argument. This article is not asking you to win a case about attendance. It is taking the case out of human court altogether.
The Spirit bears witness.
That witness is inward without being imaginary, personal without being private property, and settled without being loud. It does not need to humiliate anyone who misunderstands you. It simply tells the truth.
The chaplain wrote none and moved to the next question. God did not.
He did not move past your name. He did not reduce your prayer to an unsupported claim. He did not ask the room to vote.
You have the witness of the Holy Spirit in this moment, in this ward, in this bed. Scripture puts that witness inside the relationship God Himself began, which is why it cannot be revoked by anybody who did not begin it. The Holy Spirit speaks your belonging without demanding a room, a roster, or one word of explanation from you about the last two years.
Perhaps the line stays blank. This message is complete if it does. There is no hidden instruction to find a name to put there. Returning to a building is not the proof of anything this article has said.
The breakthrough is smaller and stronger: you can answer the practical question honestly without letting it answer the spiritual one.
You are known by name, present in Christ, and whole in your belonging. God's Spirit bears witness, says the written word, and He does not give partial testimony or hedge it pending further information. There is no half-belonging in that verse and none in you. The blank on the form described one lonely admission. It never once described your citizenship.
When the next form comes, you may still pause. Your hand may still feel the old weight. That does not make the truth less true.
None beside faith community.

- Blank beside faith community, you describe a contact list, not my covenant. The Word says the Spirit bears witness with my spirit, so no empty field has jurisdiction over whose I am.
- Fear that I belong only when another person verifies me, leave in the name of Jesus. I am fully held in Christ, because heaven's witness is not waiting for a human signature.
- God, You know the name beneath my finger, and I receive the witness of Your Holy Spirit now. Your written Word says I am Your child, my belonging is whole, and I rest in what You have already settled.
