Walking Back In2 Timothy 1:7

Room Four Is Past the Old Sanctuary

This message is for freedom from the fear of a room, without any obligation to enter it

The clinic map came through on a Thursday, and Room Four was printed past a gray rectangle somebody had labeled "sanctuary."

She had found a good therapist. That was the whole of the decision she thought she was making. The office was in a converted building off the ring road, tidy website, sensible fees, a photograph of the reception area with a plant in it. She looked at the photograph for a long time. Then she found the floor plan, and the shortest way from the front desk to Room Four ran straight along the side of the old room, and her shoulders came up before she had finished reading the word.

She has opened that map five times since. Every time her eyes go along the same corridor, slowly, the way you would read a sentence you were hoping said something different on the second pass. She is not looking for the way in. She knows the way in. She is looking for which door is the right one to use, and she means right the way she was taught to mean it, and the map does not have that information on it because no map ever has.

The appointment is a week on Tuesday. It is in the calendar. And in between now and then there is a woman deciding whether wanting the side entrance means something is wrong with her faith.

That is your map. That is your Tuesday. And I want to say something to you about corridors before you open it a sixth time.

Room Four Is Past the Old Sanctuary

Power does not mean compulsion

Second Timothy says, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." These words are sometimes used as a dare: if fear is present, prove faith by entering. That is not what the verse says.

I have spent my working life on how people get into buildings. Doors, corridors, ramps, the width of a landing. So let me tell you what a route is, because you have been reading yours as something it was never drawn to be. A route is a way in. That is the whole of it. No surveyor has ever once drawn a corridor to take the measure of somebody's nerve.

So take this before you decide a single thing about next week. You have a sound mind at that screen, on the sixth opening of that map, with your shoulders already up. That is not me being kind to you. It is what Scripture just put in your hands: not fear, but power and love and a sound mind, and the Holy Spirit who gave it is the One at work in you now while you weigh a side door against a corridor. Wisdom is not cowardice in a practical coat. You are thinking clearly, and the clarity is His and not a thing you have to prove.

Power is not the power to override your body so somebody else can call you brave. It is the capacity to choose without fear being made king over the choosing. Love includes care for the person whose shoulders tightened, and that person is you. A sound mind reads the whole map, side lane and all.

And there is no shame anywhere in taking the easier way in. The written word says the prudent see trouble coming and take cover, and it files that under wisdom rather than under retreat. You are free this afternoon to pick the door that costs you least, and free without owing anybody an explanation for it, because the Spirit who leads you has never once led by shoving. He leads. A shove comes from somewhere else.

You may also decide the corridor is simply the shortest way and walk it. That does not earn you anything either. It is a route, not a rank, and you can arrive early, take somebody with you, ask to be met at the door, or turn round in the car park and go home.

Because here is the thing the map cannot hold. Paul went through the whole created order looking for something that could get between a person and the love of God in Christ, and he came back with nothing: not height, not depth, not any created thing. You are His in that corridor and His on the video call, the same, at the same strength, with no difference between the two He would recognize. A building is a created thing. It is bricks and beams and a bit of signage, and it has never once been able to reach the thing that holds you. The Spirit who carries that assurance carries it down every route on that map at once.

The building has several tenants now. Your nervous system does not read the tenancy list. A body will know beams and acoustics and the turn of a corridor long before the mind catches up with the new sign over the door, and that is not you being irrational. That is a body doing its job with the only information it kept.

And that body is not on trial here either. David worked it out lying down and getting up again, that God knew both, and knew the way he took before he took it. You are known that far in, down to the shoulders going tight at a photograph, and being known that thoroughly is exactly what takes the performance out of it. The Holy Spirit knows the route your memory takes to get to that corridor. You have nothing left to stage for Him.

The breakthrough

The map has become a courtroom because you assumed one route must be the faithful route. Remove the judge's bench. There is no verdict waiting at Room Four.

Ring the receptionist if you want to. One plain question does it: is there another corridor, or can this one be by video. You do not owe her the history to make the question legitimate, and you can tell the therapist as much or as little as you decide to, later, or never.

But hear this before you dial, because it changes who is making the call. Paul wrote that Christ has made us free, and then told the people reading it to stand fast in it and not get harnessed up again. You have that freedom already, before the phone is answered, before the appointment, before you know which door you are using. You are standing in it right now. The Holy Spirit holds it steady whether your feet cross that corridor on Tuesday or never cross it at all. Freedom was never one particular movement you had to perform. It is the end of being compelled, and the end of it came before you opened the map.

If you never enter that building, this word is complete. If you walk in tomorrow, it is equally complete. God is not stationed on the far side waiting to see which route you take. He is with you before the decision, within it, and after it.

Declare this over yourself

Speak from your place in Christ, because His authority has been given to you for your own fear. These words address the route and your fear, never the therapist, receptionist, or any other person's will. Leave the outcome to Him and submit every word to His will.

  1. Room Four beyond the old sanctuary, you are an address and not a measure of my courage. Scripture gives me power, love, and a sound mind, so every safe route remains open to me today.
  2. Fear that choosing video or a side corridor makes me defeated, leave in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit leads without compulsion, and I possess Christ's freedom before I move one step.
  3. God, You are with me in my entering and my remaining outside, as Scripture promises, and the Holy Spirit makes Your nearness present either way. Guide the care and the route in wisdom, because no room can add to or subtract from my belonging to You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
