She opened the brown paper along one careful seam.
Her sister always wrapped parcels neatly. The tape folded at the corners. The address written in the same round hand that had labeled their lunch boxes years ago.
Inside was a devotional book.
She lifted the cover and saw two words before she saw the title page.
Come back.
No accusation followed. No letter. Just the words and a small heart drawn beneath them.
She sat at the kitchen table with the torn paper flattened under her palms.
Her first feeling was anger. The second was tenderness, because she knew her sister was afraid. Then anger again, because fear did not make the conclusion true.
She had not left God. She still prayed while washing dishes. She read Scripture slowly now, sometimes only a few lines. She spoke to Jesus without an audience. Her faith had become quieter, not absent.
Yet the parcel placed her in a story where she was far away and her sister was sending directions home.
She closed the book.
This is a purpose-written parable. It does not make the sister cruel, and it does not make the recipient responsible for calming her. It simply holds the hard moment when love arrives carrying a misreading.

Love can carry the wrong conclusion
Family concern can be sincere and still be mistaken. Those facts do not cancel each other.
You do not have to turn your sister into an enemy to refuse the label she sent. You also do not have to accept the label to prove you love her.
Romans 8 gives you stronger ground than the handwriting inside the cover:
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 8:38-39
Anything else in all creation includes paper, ink, conclusions, and family fear.
You are not separated from God's love by being misunderstood at home. Read how exhaustive Paul is being: death, life, angels, rulers, things present, things to come, powers, height, depth, nor anything else in all creation. He is deliberately closing every gap. A parcel is in creation. So is a note in a cover, and so is a sister's honest fear. The Holy Spirit keeps that belonging settled without waiting on her agreement.
This does not mean family conversations get easy. It does not promise she ever changes her mind, and I will not pretend to know whether she does. It means her conclusion has no governing power over your peace.
You have a settled place in Christ before you decide whether to answer at all. No created thing can sever that love, says Scripture, which means nothing whatsoever is riding on your reply. The Holy Spirit protects the quiet hours between receiving a parcel and choosing your next word, and He does not hurry you through them.
You may read the book. You may set it aside. You may thank her for thinking of you without agreeing with what she wrote. You may say nothing today.
No response is prescribed here. Peace is not the reward for handling the conversation perfectly.
The parcel tried to turn concern into a map and place you far from God.
But Romans 8 does not ask your family to vote on the distance. It says nothing in creation can separate you from God's love in Christ.
The parcel can stay unopened today. Opening it is not proof of love and waiting is not a punishment. Move it off the table if you want. Ask somebody safe to sit with you. Read the note and nothing else, or decide the handwriting on the front is all the information you need this week. No response is owed on the sender's timetable. A boundary around a package is what keeps concern from becoming a command inside your own house. Your sister's hope may be entirely sincere and her wording may still press directly on a wound, and both of those can be true without either of you being a villain.
You are inside that love now. Not near it, not eligible for it. Inside it, with the distance her note implied already closed by a verse written centuries before she picked up a pen. You are held there while she holds the family relationship in God's hands and not in yours, and the Holy Spirit speaks in you more deeply than the two words written across that cover.
The hidden fear may be this: If the people who raised me think I left God, perhaps they can see something I cannot. That fear deserves a direct answer.
They can know you well and still misread this part of your life.
You have discernment here, and it costs no family argument to use it. Scripture gives Christ the final word over your belonging, so there is no second opinion left to obtain and nothing left to litigate at a kitchen table. The Holy Spirit keeps you from making either her agreement or a confrontation the price of your peace. Neither one was ever the price.
Her understanding is not yours to command. You cannot declare over her will. You can place her name before God and speak only what He has settled over you.
This is not distance from family. It is a boundary around identity.
You are free to love your sister without putting on her fear like a coat. God's love holds you, says Scripture, and it was holding you before the parcel arrived and will be holding you after it is dealt with. The Holy Spirit makes room for affection, disappointment and peace to sit at the same table without any of the three being asked to leave.
The devotional can remain closed. Love has not closed with it.
Declare this over yourself
- Words inside this cover, you can show what my sister fears, but you cannot tell God where I am. Scripture says nothing can separate me from His love, and the Holy Spirit keeps me settled here.
- Fear that being misread by family makes me uncertain to God, leave my table in the name of Jesus. Their agreement is not the ground of my belonging, and I do not need to win an argument to receive peace.
- God, Scripture says Your love in Christ holds me, and the Holy Spirit keeps me from turning my sister into a project. Hold both of us without requiring agreement today; I rest inside what You have settled over me.
