At six in the morning the schedule refreshed. Your name was still in bold beside the assignment you had declined in writing three weeks earlier.
You had not been vague. You had sent a date, returned the key, and said you would no longer serve. Yet the row remained. Before the kettle clicked off, your body had already interpreted that old entry as a summons. You pictured an empty station, an irritated message, and people saying you had let them down. The name on the screen began to feel heavier than the choice you had made.
The schedule records what somebody entered. It does not record what God requires. Those are different authorities, and confusing them has kept many faithful people carrying work after their yes ended.
You may have checked the rota more than once, not because you want the assignment back, but because the unchanged row keeps reopening the decision. That repetition can train the body to expect a demand before any message arrives. It can also make a clear resignation feel unfinished when the unfinished part belongs entirely to somebody else's administration. The date on your letter remains the date. The key remains returned. Sunday morning is not a hearing where you must prove those facts again.

A row is not a yoke
Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." He did not tell the weary to return first to every task another person had left beside their name. He named Himself as the destination of the burdened.
You are received by Jesus in that kitchen before one duty on that list gets performed. Come unto me is the whole of the instruction, and look carefully at where He put the rest: I will give you rest, on the near side of the yoke and not the far side of it. The Holy Spirit is making that welcome present where your screen is glowing at six in the morning. Your nearness to Christ is not up the road waiting at an assignment. It is here, and it got here before you did.
Then Jesus described His yoke as easy and His burden as light. That does not mean every faithful act feels effortless. It means His authority does not arrive through manipulation, ignored consent, or an administrative line that refuses to be corrected.
You have a no that stays a no even where the person who received it never wrote it down. Let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay, said Jesus, and He said it to protect ordinary people from precisely this: a plain word given once and then treated as provisional by somebody who would have preferred a different answer. The Holy Spirit bears truth without ever attaching a hidden spiritual invoice to it. An ignored boundary is evidence about their record keeping. It is not evidence about your obedience, and it never was.
The fear says that somebody will be inconvenienced. That may be true. A gap on a rota is still not a covenant. Other adults may decide what to do with it, and you do not have to solve the choice they postponed.
You have Christ's rest before the staffing problem gets solved. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, and remaineth is a present-tense word doing present-tense work there: the rest is standing available now, not held back pending somebody's resolution. The Holy Spirit is not in the least embarrassed to seat you in it while an old row sits unfinished on a screen somewhere. Rest was never the reward handed out to people who kept every system running.
There is another fear underneath that one. If they can still print your name, perhaps they can still name your standing with God. They cannot. A list can describe an assignment. It cannot confer sonship, it cannot withdraw grace, and it cannot amend one word of what Jesus finished.
You are His in the quiet Sunday that follows a resignation. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God, and the Holy Spirit is bearing that witness in you now, outside the old pattern, with nobody from the building present to countersign it. The absence of an assignment is not the absence of God. Those two have never been the same thing, and they are not the same thing this morning.
The rota has been functioning like a hook because visibility has been treated as authority. If your name can still be seen, the pressure says an answer is still owed. But a hook only holds what remains hung upon it.
You resigned. That fact does not become untrue because somebody left a cell unchanged. You can send one practical correction if you freely choose, keep your earlier message for your records, or do nothing further. None of those choices measures faith.
You have a Sunday under the gentle government of Jesus and not under a forgotten spreadsheet. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. Leadeth and restoreth, both present tense, and neither one of them involves a man being dragged backwards by his own name. The Holy Spirit leads the way a shepherd leads, out in front, at the pace of the slowest one in the flock, and He has always known the difference between guidance and pressure even where a rota does not.
You may feel sadness when the old hour arrives. You may also feel relief, anger, fatigue, or nothing at all. None is a verdict. Leaving the assignment was not leaving Christ. The One who said "come unto me" is already where you have come to rest.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you. Scripture records Jesus teaching His people to speak to mountains, and the Holy Spirit carries His received authority without manufactured volume. Speak plainly and leave the outcome to Him, because these words submit to His will rather than forcing it.
- Rota carrying my name, you do not carry authority over my Sunday or this moment of leaving. The Word says Christ's yoke is easy and His burden is light, so this old row has reached its limit and my hands are open now.
- Fear that an ignored boundary makes me disobedient, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit bears witness that I am God's child, and a spreadsheet cannot add a debt to sonship.
- God, You are my Shepherd here, and I receive the settled rest Scripture promises as the Holy Spirit leads me. In my going out and my staying home, my name is held by You more securely than it was ever held on a rota.
